Gwydion Calder
Scholar-Artist

As a scholar, I am drawn to the unspoken and the implied. I am drawn to the shadowy corners of ambiguity within realms of study, specifically as these studies apply to speech and voice. I am fascinated by the mechanism of the voice and its abnormalities, especially as it relates to singing – my unique journey down the vocal studies path has shown there are holes in standard vocal pedagogy. I have also been ensorcelled by the mystic release that accompanies the loosing of one’s voice.

As an artist, I find the greatest pleasure in telling stories that illuminate the voices of the underdogs, the oppressed, the ignored. I use my voice onstage to share my experiences through the vehicle of performance texts, marrying my personal stories with those of the character I portray. In the field of voiceover, I delight in expanding my character portrayals because of the flexibility I pursue in vocal range. My voice can make people laugh, cry, and shake their heads in utter confusion. My written works endeavor to summon the details often taken for granted within the stories some are afraid to tell and others are afraid to hear.

As a scholar-artist, I am concerned always with making my voice heard as a theatrical collaborator and performer, and for engaging in projects to which everyone who is human can relate. I aim to bridge the gaps between the wonderfully diverse human race – we all turn to dust in the end.
